1958: Audrey Hepburn holds Ip, also known as Ippy and Pip, the fawn used during the filming of Green Mansions. Ip became an integrated member of the Ferrer family, actually living at the Ferrer home with Mel, Audrey, and Famous (her dog) and sleeping in the family’s bathtub. As for the fawn’s acting abilities, Mel is quoted as having said, “I still cannot understand why Ippy did not deserve a nomination. He performed brilliantly.” Her son Luca recalls, “Her love for the fawn finally broke her heart. She never stopped telling us how much sorrow she felt when they had to part. It also became one of her greatest legacies left to us: Nature is not a game to play with.”

Kathorseine Hepburn with Spencer Tracy
1958: Before I started working on Green Mansions, I photographed Audrey and the little fawn deer that was living with her. The animal trainers advised the production that if they wished the fawn to follow Audrey in the film, then it had to think Audrey was its mother. So Pippin lived with her for months. Audrey’s natural calm made her a perfectly suited surrogate mother for this nervous little fawn. She fed it, took it shopping in Beverly Hills, and even had afternoon naps with it. It loved her and followed her everywhere. When Audrey was away, it missed her, and when she came back, it would nuzzle up against her, and be excited to see her. No one else could come near it, unless Audrey was there. Audrey’s little Yorkshire, “Famous,” turned out to be very jealous, as it had always been the prima donna in the household. I have photographs of it pouting behind lamps, grumbling to itself, when the deer was getting Audrey’s attention, like a rival sibling. — Bob Willoughby
